2013 has been a busy and productive year here at Penderyn. As you might have read in the press we have spent a lot of time setting up our expansion plans for the distillery and having built stock and relocated our bottling line from the main distillery building to our annex warehouse, we commissioned Penderyn’s second whisky still in August 2013, almost 13 years after the first was installed back in September 2000.
During the first half of the year we celebrated the release of Penderyn “Red Flag”, the first in our “Icons of Wales Series” with the second edition of the series Penderyn “Independence” being released last August. Both have proved popular with our followers. Watch out for our next Icon offering which will be released in early 2014. This will be a tribute to Dylan Thomas, the celebrated Welsh writer and poet and its release will coincide with Dylan’s centenary year which will be marked by international celebrations including many events of readings, film, documentaries and performance.
We continue to enjoy recognition for the quality of our whiskies in international spirit competitions and very recently we won an award from Insider Magazine as the best of “Made in Wales” in their food and drink category. In addition, we were very proud to receive a “Certificate of Excellence” in 2013 from Trip Advisor which was based on the great reviews of many visitors to the Penderyn Visitor centre either for a tour or a master class and in November we were all delighted when the Visitor Centre received the Regional Capital Award at the National Tourism Awards for Wales. We continue to work hard to make the “Welsh whisky experience” a special and memorable one for all concerned, whether it’s in the glass or at the distillery.
As usual, we have attended many events and shows for example in London, Paris, New York, The Hague, Zurich and Copenhagen so Penderyn is regularly showcased on an international scale bringing attention and interest to our whisky and our country. We were also delighted to celebrate the promotion of Cardiff City into the English Premier League with a special half bottle collector’s edition – another great achievement with an international profile.
So as 2013 draws to a close, we ready ourselves for the New Year and the final stage of the distillery expansion which, all being well, will be completed in June 2014. This consists of the addition of a new mash ton & fermenters and a set of pot stills. This will transform distillery production and also provide for a new and more in-depth and informative visitor experience.
All in all, it will be an exciting 12 months ahead. Have a great Christmas and do come and see us in 2014.
