Penderyn Distillery - the home of Welsh Whisky

About Our Spirit

Lava Flow copy

The story of Penderyn’s spirit starts 340 million years ago, long before even dinosaurs walked the earth. Geologically speaking the world was a very violent place and it was during the carboniferous period that the geological formations underlying our distillery were first laid down. The sub-period was known as the Mississippian and the geologists tell us that Wales at the time lay in the ancient continent known as Euramerica and a lot nearer to the equator than it does today.

Much later on, a mere 10,000 years ago, the last ice age ended and the ice floes covering Northern Europe stopped where Penderyn Distillery lies today before retreating back to the Arctic.

The geological significance of the area is recognised by UNESCO and the Fforest Fawr National Park, which lies within the Brecon Beacons and surrounds Penderyn, is one of only 53 Geoparks across the globe which exhibit "geological heritage of great significance".

Much legend and folklore surrounds the area.  Not only is the Arthurian legend alive and well with two peaks of the Brecon Beacons collectively known as "Arthur’s Seat" but many others survive.  The shepherd of Myddfai tells how a young shepherd won and lost a fairy bride from Lynn y Fan Fach (Van Vach), the fairy lake of the Brecon Beacons.
